Community Compost

Composting helps the environment, enriches soil, and benefits our gardens and crops. It is a small action with significant positive impacts! Feel free to bring your kitchen and yard scraps with you when you come to the Sanctuary. See below for a few easy guidelines:

Brown Matter (Carbon)

Cardboard, hay, dried leaves, sawdust, chopped wood, newspaper, cardboard egg cartons, wrapping paper, paper towels, straw, toilet paper rolls, wood ash (not coal), dried grass, shredded paper, 100% cotton fabrics (in small pieces)

Green Matter (Nitrogen)

Vegetable or fruits (cooked or raw), eggshells, looseleaf tea, coffee grounds, dead houseplants, weeds (without seed heads), old flower bouquets, yard waste (grass clippings, green leaves, bark, prunings, flowers)

The No No’s

Dog or cat feces, citrus peels, onions, bread or other grain products, fish and meat products, sticky labels on fruit, dairy products, cooking oil, sawdust from treated wood, glossy paper, personal hygiene products, diseased plants, non-biodegradable products, coal ash, rice, tea or coffee bags
